Maths Team Challenge

One of the Year 6 teams enjoying the fun.

On the 3rd of August, the Queensland Association of Maths Teachers (QAMT) presented their annual Maths Team Challenge and Extension Learning Program for Year 5 and 6 students at Glenmore High. Glenmore State School were well represented by 20 students making up 4 teams.

The day started with an individual challenge, where students are given 3 minutes to answer as many questions as they can.

This is followed by what is probably the highlight of the day – the Relay. Teams have 30 minutes to solve 25 challenging Maths problems while frantically swapping chairs and partners. It looks like mathematical musical chairs!
The next event is the Team Questions where teams are given another 30 minutes to work collaboratively to solve 10, even more challenging, questions.
All 4 of the Glenmore State School teams performed exceptionally well and should be commended for their outstanding efforts.
The final event was the Individual Shoot Out where all participants from all the schools in the competition answer quick fire questions until only 1 student from each year level remains standing and is crowned the Individual Champion.
What a thrill it was to see that when only 2 year 5 students were left standing, both were from Glenmore State School!
Our own Declan Lye and Prateek Poudel had a stirring duel, with Prateek eventually pipping Declan at the post to claim the Year 5 title. Prateek eventually went on to finish second overall, beating all but 1 of the year 6s, while Declan finished 5th overall. What a fantastic result!
Our students stayed on to participate in the Extension Learning Program. A range of fun, yet challenging, Maths problems are provided to students to assist to develop a wide range of problem solving skills and to help them in their efforts to Smash Maths.
A big thank you goes to Suella Lye from Glenmore High and the QAMT members, for organising such an outstanding event, as well as Mrs Mason, Mrs Michell and Mrs Frost for supporting our students on the day.
A special thank you goes to the 20 exceptional students who represented our school in such an outstanding manner. Well done!
